Building Schools For The Future

Recently I was delighted to visit my old school which is currently going through a remarkable transformation. The amazing turnaround of Jarrow School has become a real success story and is down to the hard work of the staff and pupils and helped by increased government investment in education. The school, which opened in September 2003 following the amalgamation of Springfield and Hedworthfield Comprehensive Schools , has experienced difficult times but it currently stands in the top 150 most improved schools in the country.

Bilton Hall Boxing Club & Local Sports Funding

When I heard the announcement that we had won the 2012 Olympic Games I was delighted.  The Olympics is an exciting opportunity for the UK , creating jobs, attracting visitors and providing inspiration.  But whilst it is pleasing that one of the greatest sporting events in the world is coming to this country concern is growing amongst our local sports clubs about the possible adverse impact of the Olympics on their funding.  Costs to host the 2012 event continue to spiral and there are mounting fears that funds to pay for this increase will come at the expense of our local clubs in the North East.

Gangmasters

There are many employers in the UK  who provide an excellent service and operate within the law and treat their workers with respect. However, that is not always the case. The drowning of at least 21 Chinese cockle pickers in dangerous rising tides in Morecambe Bay over three years ago was an appalling tragedy and illustrated how foreign workers can be exploited by rogue providers of work. Since that tragic loss of life, the Gangmasters (Licensing) Act 2004 has been put into place to make it an offence to work as a labour provider, or gangmaster, without a licence.

Child Trust Fund

We all know that not all children have the opportunity to the best start in life financially speaking.  That is why Labour faced this inequality head on with the introduction of the Child Trust Fund.  Every child born after the 1st September 2002 in receipt of child benefit now receives a £250 voucher to start their own account, with £500 going to children from lower income families.  £250 is in addition awarded when the child reaches the age of 7.  An extra £250 at that time will go to children from less affluent families.  Family and friends have the ability to contribute up to £1,200 per year to the tax free account, meaning in theory the child will have a handy and substantial financial asset with he or she turns 18.

Corporate Responsibility Bill
Last Friday I had the honour of asking Parliament to debate my proposals to make directors responsible for the safety practices of their companies.

This was the culmination of weeks of activity which saw trade unions, victims' groups and the families of those who have lost loved ones because of a workplace death join together to press the government for reform so that safety is a company priority but where accidents do occur and negligence is clear justice can be done.

Credit and Debt
There's nothing wrong with debt.  The 'little waster' Bobby Thomson used to joke that he was up to his eyes in debt and only wished he was a little taller!  But where debt is wrong is when lenders give money to poor vulnerable people charging extortionate interest rates.  This happens all too often in South Tyneside where a desire may not be for that High Street bank loan for a new car but the more pressing need for a pram or a school uniform.  Just that couple of hundred pound loan from a doorstep lender can quickly turn into a four figure sum with little or no chance to pay it back.
