I visited Jarrow Bowling Club to celebrate the club’s recent national achievements.  I was there to meet with mother & son John & Doreen Lawton, both members at the club, who have become the English Bowls Federation Mixed Pairs Outdoor Champions.

Labour Party Conference 2009

This weekend marks the start of the Labour Party Annual Conference. Held every autumn, Labour’s Conference is one of the largest and most high profile political events in Europe. The main talking point will understandably be the next General Election and how we can persuade the people of this country to give us the chance to finish the task we have undertaken. A major topic will of course be the economic downturn, which has led to many people across the country experiencing financial struggles. These are tough times for many people in South Tyneside the difference being is that Labour is committed to helping families and communities unlike previous recessions in the 1980’s and 90’s when the Tories walked away!

GCSE and A-Level results 2009

This summer produced another fantastic set of GCSE and A-Level results in South Tyneside.  Well done to all students in our area who have worked so hard to reach such outstanding levels of achievement this year. At A-Level, South Tyneside students achieved a strong set of results, with a pass rate of 97% at grades A-E. At GCSE level, schools in South Tyneside have reported results that are 11.8 per cent above the national average with 78.9 per cent of students gaining five good A* - C passes at GCSE level.  It has taken a great deal of effort and dedication, and I for one would like to offer my congratulations.

Government support through economic downturn

During these difficult times it is vital that people get up-to-date information that is available to them. The Government is acting because extra support is needed to get us through the economic downturn and not to repeat the mistake the Tories made by leaving families and communities to cope on their own. Therefore, it is imperative that people in our area have access to the extra support available for families, pensioners, homeowners, and for those people who are looking to get back on the employment ladder.

Climate Change

Earlier this month I was delighted to meet with the staff and pupils at St. Joseph’s RC Comprehensive School in Hebburn. During my visit I chatted with pupils on environmental issues, such as the dangers posed by climate change. With climate change being a big issue for us all, there has probably never been a more important time for environmental education.
