The demise of coal mining was a big blow to the North East. Losing one of our great industries which the North East was built upon left many families devastated. Our mining industry was disgracefully wiped out by the Tories and in the years that passed we have seen mining communities shattered and thousands of livelihoods lost. Against this background and on the 25th anniversary of the Miners Strike our communities are certainly a poorer place without them and their contribution will never be forgotten. |

10 years of the National Minimum Wage |
This month (April 2009) marks ten years since the introduction of the National Minimum Wage. In tough times it is more important than ever to have one. I remember the economic recessions under the Tories when employers could pay a worker a quid or less per hour for a full days work! Approximately 60,000 workers in the north east have benefited from the latest increase in the rate of the minimum wage to £5.73. |
